What are vitamins?
Vitamins are complex chemicals that are essential for a range of body
functions. Apart from vitamin D, the body cannot manufacture the vitamins it
needs on its own, so we need to include them in our diet. A balanced diet
incorporating a variety of foods from all the food groups will normally contain
all the vitamins our bodies need.
Vitamin supplements
Although most people are able to meet their requirements for vitamins by eating
a varied diet, there are certain groups of the population who have higher than
normal requirements, e.g. those who are sick, those taking certain drugs and
pregnant women, such people need to ensure they eat foods rich in particular
vitamins and sometimes supplements are advised. Infants and young children are
recommended to have supplements of vitamins A and D for at least 2 years. Some
women many require additional iron if menstrual losses are high.
So when is it beneficial to take supplements?
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, an infant, elderly, a strict vegetarian or
vegan or on a restricted diet, you may be at risk of vitamin deficiency. In any
of these circumstances, your doctor may recommend that you take extra vitamins.
